Alterocca Terni Postcards
for the Leoncavallo's Opera Zazà (1900)

These promotional cards for the opera Zazà (1900) are to me some of the most charming of commercial expressions in the business of musical theater. They were shot against drops, with costumes and props from the original production, with members of the original cast. They were captioned by the composer with a musical phrase, then captioned by the card company with a complementary line from the opera. They were numbered and released apparently in great quantities; variations in their appearance, numbering, and captioning are what make them even more interesting. Often the way they were used, as actual postcards, greeting cards, or memorabilia make each one unique. My classification of each series is my own, in an attempt to get a sense of how many different versions there are, with variants. A high-quality version of each will eventually be available by clicking on the details, along with a complete description of the card, the verso as well as the textual content.
